    Windows 10 is coming to a phone near you: Everything you need to know

It seems like ages since Microsoft announced the arrival of Windows 10 and all the changes the latest operating system will bring to PCs, tablets, and smartphones. Now the company’s January 21 press event, where it will discuss the future of mobile devices on Windows 10, is fast approaching.

We’ve piled together everything we know so far about Microsoft’s plans for mobile in this handy post. We’ll continue to report on updates here ahead of the January 21 event.

Microsoft recently released the Phone Insider preview app on its app store, where users will be able to download pre-release OS updates to their phones, straight from Microsoft. At this point, only Microsoft employees with special access can test out Windows 10 on their Windows phones and tablets, but the company will soon open the software up  to those who are signed up for Microsoft’s special Windows 10 Technical Preview.

Microsoft already issued a Preview for Developers app, so that those with a registered Windows Phone Dev Center account can access all the early builds and work on app updates ahead of time. The Phone Insider preview app is slightly more democratic, and precludes the final, official release.

In December, Microsoft said more than 1.5 million people were registered Windows Insiders, with access to Windows 10 software in advance. Microsoft is expected to open up the Phone Insider app to those users shortly after the January 21 event.

WINDOWS 10 FOR PHONES PREVIEW EXPECTED BY END OF JANUARY
The Verge reckons that Microsoft’s grand Windows 10 smartphone throwdown will take place on January 21 at a press event.
Microsoft is preparing to preview its latest version of Windows Phone later this month. The software giant released a “Phone Insider” app over the weekend, ahead of a January 21st press event where the company will reveal its plans for Windows 10 across phones and tablets. Sources familiar with Microsoft’s plans tell The Verge that the company will demo a number of features aimed at Windows 10 on phones, including some user interface changes designed to more closely align its mobile operating system with its desktop counterpart and the Xbox One games console.
Microsoft is also making changes to Windows 10 on the desktop to include light and dark themes that match the phone and tablet editions. Currently referred to as Windows Mobile and Windows 10 Mobile internally at Microsoft, the next mobile OS will be a combination of the Windows Phone and Windows RT operating systems. Microsoft is aiming to take advantage of its universal applications model to align its tablet and phone software to run the same apps across tablets and phones. While the company will detail its developer and app plans further at Build, the January 21st event will focus more on the consumer features of both the desktop and phone / tablet operating system. Microsoft may even choose to name its new combined Windows RT and Windows Phone OS at the event.
The recently released “Phone Insider” app provides similar access to the Windows 10 insider program, allowing enthusiasts and partners to test an early version of Windows 10 for phones. While the app only works for Microsoft employees at present, we understand Microsoft will be expanding its use to allow anyone to sign up and install Windows 10 on modern Windows Phones. Like the Windows 10 insider program, the initial preview for phones will be limited in features as the company seeks feedback on changes ahead of a release later this year. Microsoft is expected to release the Windows 10 for phones preview by the end of January, following the press event on January 21st. Windows Mobile 10 pre-release OS updates expected to be available through Phone Insider app....

 

The Phone Insider app will reportedly provide the ability to receive the pre-relase OS updates for Windows 10 for Phones, rumoured to be known as Windows Mobile 10.

Windows Insider Program, launched following the announcement of Windows 10, intended for PC experts and IT professionals gives access to the Technical Preview version to taste the pre-release version of the operating system. The members of Windows Insider Program will receive the early builds of Windows 10 having the latest features which are being experimented.

It now appears that Microsoft will follow a similar practice for the Windows 10 for Phones. An app called Phone Insider, published by Microsoft last November, is now available in the Windows Phone Store. The release note for the app suggests that it will offer the ability to receive the pre-release software updates, which will be for registered Windows Insiders only. Check the description of the app.

"The Phone Insider application provides registered Windows Insiders the ability to receive pre-release OS updates on their phone, directly from Microsoft. For more information about registering and becoming a Windows Insider visit http://insider.windows.com."

The Phone Insider app is now available for download from the Store.

Unlike the Preview for Developers program, the Phone Insider app will also be able to deliver carrier firmware, says WMPoweruser. Microsoft is yet to make anything official about the Phone Insider app but it could be the replacement for company's Preview for Developers program for Windows Phone 10.

Microsoft is expected to unveil the Windows Mobile 10 at an event scheduled on 21 January.

Phone Insider app now available, Get Ready for Windows Phone 10 Pre Release

Microsoft is just around the corner from unveiling a brand new build of Windows 10, which will include a number of new features and changes. Along with the unveiling of these new features, Microsoft is also rumored to be planning to unveil Windows Phone 10 too, which may ultimately be called Windows Mobile 10.

Today, a new app titled Phone Insider appeared in the Windows Phone Store, which “provides registered Windows Insiders the ability to receive pre-release OS updates on their phone, directly from Microsoft.” Right now, normal insiders are unable to sign into the app, as it’s currently only available for internal Microsoft employees.
Nawzil on Twitter claims the app will be updated soon which will enable normal Windows Insiders to sign in, allowing them to receive pre-release OS updates. It looks like this app will eventually enable your phone to update to Windows Mobile 10, which is definitely exciting.
